World of Tanks is a free-to-play online multiplayer tank shooter created by Belarusian developer Wargaming and launched in 2010. Its vehicle roster centers on historical armor from the mid-20th century through the Cold War. Players progress from classic tanks toward advanced machines through 11 national technology-tree branches and hundreds of vehicles. The main format is a 15v15 random team battle, where each side must destroy the opposing force or capture its base within the time limit. Five vehicle classes serve different tactical roles. Light tanks scout and make rapid attacks, medium tanks emphasize flexibility and teamwork, heavy tanks absorb damage and break defensive lines, tank destroyers specialize in long-range fire, and self-propelled guns provide indirect support from a tactical view. Other modes include the 7v7 Onslaught mode, the large-map 30v30 Frontline mode, and the Steel Hunter battle royale. Clans can contest the Global Map and fight Stronghold defenses. Crew skills, equipment, and field modifications allow vehicles to be customized, while paint schemes, styles, and other cosmetic items change their appearance. Visuals and physics have continued to receive upgrades, with detailed vehicles and destructible elements across the maps. By 2026, the game had more than 180 million players worldwide. The Steam version was released in 2020.
