Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a four-player co-op first-person action shooter developed by the Swedish studio Fatshark, building on the gameplay framework of the team's Vermintide series. The game launched on November 30, 2022 on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S, with the Warhammer 40,000 IP licensed from Games Workshop. The story takes place in Tertium, a vast hive city that a mysterious and malevolent force is trying to seize control of. Players take on the role of the Rejects — prisoners sentenced to death who are conscripted by the Inquisition and given the chance to earn redemption by carrying out missions. The goal is to root out the threat lurking in the hive's depths before Chaos consumes the city entirely. Four customizable classes are available: the Veteran Sharpshooter, the Ogryn Skullbreaker, the Psyker Psykinetic, and the Zealot Preacher. Each class has its own weapons, skills, and combat style. Combat blends ranged shooting with melee, and players must balance mid-range firepower with close-quarters fighting — carving through enemies with a chainsword or taking them out at range with a Lasgun, for example. The game is co-op: four players must work closely together to survive. Straying from the group is punished — enemies such as the Chaos Hound or the Moebian Trapper will try to isolate and capture a lone teammate, and only allies can free them. Players also only regenerate Toughness, a shield that absorbs damage, when close to their teammates. There are five difficulty levels and more than 15 enemy types, including zombie-like Poxwalkers, Maulers wielding chain axes, and the summonable Daemonhost. The forces of Chaos can also apply random Conditions — mutators that add extra challenge to missions, requiring players to keep adjusting their tactics and loadouts. For progression, players earn experience from missions to level up and unlock new gear and weapons. The ship Mourningstar serves as the social hub, where players customize their appearance and choose character backstories. The game also includes long-term content such as a crafting system and weekly challenges. The Mature Content Description explicitly states that the game contains bloody violence and gore.
