Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG developed over four and a half years by independent creator ConcernedApe, also known as Eric Barone. It first launched on PC in February 2016. Players inherit their grandfather’s abandoned farm and use simple tools to turn overgrown land into a productive home. Five major skills—Farming, Mining, Combat, Fishing, and Foraging—develop as players grow crops, raise animals, fish, mine, and explore caves for income and resources. More than 30 distinctive villagers live in Stardew Valley, each with a personal schedule, birthday, story events, and secrets. Friendships can develop into romances, marriage, and children. Seasonal festivals, quests, and collection goals provide long-term structure. The main story can follow either the restoration of the Community Center or membership in Joja Corporation, leading to sharply different outcomes. Later updates brought the game to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android and added cooperative multiplayer. With pixel art, full controller support, extensive player freedom, and a large community, Stardew Valley is widely regarded as a benchmark for farming and life-simulation games. Its Metacritic score is 89.
