The game takes place in the Salzaar desert after the Eclipse War: the old empire has collapsed, tribes and factions fight for dominance, and an older conspiracy lurks beneath it all. The game uses procedural world rules, so every new playthrough offers a different experience. You can choose from different heroes, build a unique skill tree, and take part in large-scale city sieges or smaller skirmishes. There are ten starting hero classes, each with its own storyline and skill path. Core gameplay spans several layers. First, story-driven adventure: you interact with various characters, building or breaking relationships, and a city lord whose bond is broken may defect or even crown themselves ruler. Second, strategic combat, including city offense and defense battles and skill combos. Third, trade and commerce: you can focus on economic activities to accumulate wealth. Fourth, dungeon exploration and challenges against powerful foes, competing for rare treasures. The game includes a visual mod editor, so you can modify or expand the game content without any programming knowledge. Sands of Salzaar first launched on Steam in Early Access in January 2020, and the full release came on December 16, 2021. It supports Simplified Chinese and English, with a single-player mode, Steam achievements, Workshop, and cloud saves. Several DLC expansions have been released, including Tournament (比武大会), Summer of Heshi (赫石之夏), and Winter of the Misty Realm (胧境之冬).
