About Papers, Please

Players take on the role of an immigration inspector at the border checkpoint of Arstotzka, a communist country, checking each entrant's documents to decide who may legally enter.

Eight hours from now, players begin their work as immigration inspectors at the Grestin border checkpoint in Arstotzka. Set in the fictional communist country of Arstotzka, the game tasks players with checking every entrant's documents — including ID cards, residence permits, and work permits — and cross-referencing the information with the fingerprint system to approve or deny entry applications. As the game progresses, regulations keep piling up, and players must complete their inspection duties within a limited number of daily stamps. Every wrong decision — admitting someone whose documents do not match or wrongly rejecting a legitimate traveler — deducts precious living allowances. Players also have to support their family members, using their income to buy food and medicine. The game features multiple different endings, and the story touches on bureaucracy, moral choices, political satire, and dark themes such as smuggling, espionage, and terrorism. The game contains pixel-art violence and nudity. Developed by 3909 LLC, it was released on PC, Mac, and Linux in August 2013, and later ported to iOS and Android.
