Overwatch® is a free-to-play multiplayer online team action game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The original game launched in 2016, and on August 10, 2023, the series officially debuted as Overwatch 2 on Steam and other platforms. Set in a hopeful, tech-driven future world, players face off in 5v5 first-person shooting matches, with every match playing out as an intense team battle. Core gameplay revolves around role division and teamwork. Each team is built around three hero roles — tank heroes absorb damage, charge forward, and break through enemy lines; damage heroes use a diverse range of weapons and skills to find and eliminate enemies; support heroes provide teammates with healing, shields, damage boosts, or crowd control. Every hero has unique abilities and playstyles, such as a freedom fighter who can leap through time and space and a battlefield DJ who supports the fight with music. Maps span locations around the world, covering many types of battlegrounds. The game uses a free-to-play model; players can buy battle passes, skins, and other cosmetic items. It supports cross-platform play and cross-platform progression, and offers Quick Play, Competitive mode, and other modes. As a live-service online game, Blizzard regularly releases new heroes, maps, and events.
