No Man's Sky is an open-world sci-fi exploration and survival game developed by the British studio Hello Games. It originally launched on August 9, 2016, for PC and PS4, with later releases on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, plus VR support. Players take on the role of an interstellar traveler exploring a procedurally generated infinite universe. Every galaxy, planet, ecosystem, and creature is generated by algorithms and differs from the next. You can pilot your ship between star systems, gather resources on planet surfaces, craft equipment, and upgrade your ship and exosuit, and share the planets you discover with other players. The core loop centers on exploration, resource gathering, base building, and jumping between star systems. On the story side, you head toward the pulse source at the center of the galaxy, gradually uncovering the true nature of the universe. The game also includes combat: you'll face hostile alien creatures and pirate threats. Later updates added base building, ground vehicles, pets, ship customization, expedition mode, settlements, online multiplayer co-op, and much more, bringing the total to over 40 large free updates. The Nintendo Switch version launched in October 2022 and supports both handheld and docked play; a version exclusive to Switch 2 has also been released. Up to four players can play together online.
