Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game based on Journey to the West, developed by Game Science in Shenzhen. It is the first game in the Black Myth series, released simultaneously worldwide on August 20, 2024 for PC (Steam, Epic), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The player takes on the role of the Destined One, a monkey-shaped warrior, and the story, drawn from the original novel Journey to the West, follows his adventure in search of the truth behind a legend. The settings draw on cultural and natural landscapes from Shanxi, Chongqing, Ningxia, Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Fujian, blending Eastern aesthetics with the real-time lighting technology of Unreal Engine 5. The combat system emphasizes the rhythm of stance-based exchanges between light and heavy attacks. The protagonist wields staff-type weapons and has skills such as the Seventy-Two Transformations, which lets him change into different forms for distinct combat abilities and puzzle-solving options. The game uses linear level design, with hidden bosses and side content in some areas. The Steam store page shows the game supports Simplified Chinese interface and subtitles, and maintains a "Very Positive" review rating (with more than several hundred thousand reviews as of the end of 2024).
